Currently in Social Studies class, we
are learning about Waitangi day.
are learning about Waitangi day.
3 FACTS
- The treaty was mistranslated
- It was signed on February 6th, 1850.
- The first chief to sign the Treaty was Hōne Heke.
3 DIFFERENT POVs
- Some people say “There's always the political
conflict thing. It's not a day of celebrating for a lot of
people.” Their point of view on Waitangi is that it is
unimportant and not so much a day of celebration.

- Others say that the treaty is a “timeless arrangement”
that should be celebrated and recognised through Waitangi Day.
It should be a peaceful day celebrating a founding document.

- Another perspective on Waitangi is that it is not
patriotic enough and we should be more interactive with
our neighbours, family and other citizens of the
country. They think it’s important but we aren’t
making a big enough contribution to the day.

PERSONAL OPINION
I personally think that it is important to celebrate
the day but we shouldn't have a set way to do so.
I also think that it’s important that we learn about
the treaty as it is our founding document and although
the time around it’s signing wasn’t so peaceful, we should
still be learning about our country’s history.
